When we planted cherry trees, it was necessary for me to take measures to nurture the seedlings and protect them from diseases.

The Fight Against Foreign Weeds

By the time May came, it was necessary to control the weeds covering the seedlings.

Using a rotavator, I cut the weeds and mixed them with the soil to combat the weeds and also enrich the soil with organic fertilizer.

Then, after completing the installation of drip irrigation pipes, I started the irrigation program and also applied liquid worm fertilizer along with irrigation. The seedlings had now started to sprout leaves and grow.

Fungal Disease.

However, in June 2022, the year the seedlings were planted, there was excessive rainfall. Although rainfall is rare in June in Turgutlu, Manisa, the subsequent days saw extremely high temperatures, leading the seedlings to be affected by fungal disease.

Initially, I couldn’t understand the diseases, but when the leaves started turning black, the stems of the seedlings began to wither. I brought agricultural engineers to the cherry orchard to identify the disease and learn which pesticides to use. I applied the pesticides immediately and anxiously waited. The seedlings were struggling to adapt to their new life and fight against the disease. Towards the end of July, improvements began to appear in the trees, and I was very happy.

We completed our first year, and autumn was approaching. Since the seedlings hadn’t grown much, I didn’t prune them; I simply applied a copper-containing Bordeaux mixture in the fall, and the trees began to go dormant.
