Cherry Trees and Rootstock

After leveling and fencing the mountainous land I purchased in Dalbahçe, Turgutlu, Manisa, it was time to start creating my dream orchard. At this stage, I needed to choose the type, Cherry Trees and rootstock variety of the fruit tree I would plant.

I had previously planted fig, pear, and cherry trees in my garden. The yield of these trees was quite good in the existing climate and soil conditions. Therefore, I wanted to plant figs and cherries again.

How to place trees in revit?

After fencing the land, I started planning the placement of the trees using Revit. I selected my region and the months to see how the sun hits the trees from each angle and how it shades them at every hour of the day.

The Decision Stage:

I decided to plant only cherry trees due to the very long growing season of figs. It was time to decide which cherry variety to plant. Ziraat900 (northwonder) was a cherry variety grown in our region and exported abroad. I didn’t want to choose another variety because it had grown in this soil before. However, I needed to choose a pollinators, Cherry Trees and Rootstock.

What rootstock is used for cherries?

When choosing a rootstock, I preferred semi-dwarf rootstocks because they require less labor and allow for faster fruit production. I chose the Maxma14 rootstock grafted with Northwonder. I used Revit to re-position the trees accordingly. The rootstock variety was a very important detail for tree spacing.

What is the best pollinator for cherries?

Pollinator selection was a very important issue. First, I needed to choose the variety. After choosing Regina and Lambert, I placed one out of every 9 trees as a pollinator.

Benefiting from Sunlight and Shading:

I also used Revit to test how I should orient the trees. I placed them in a way that would allow them to benefit most from the sun’s rays at each hour of the day and prevent the trees’ shadows from overlapping.

Conclusion:

At this stage, I had laid the foundation for my dream orchard correctly, considering factors such as the tree variety, rootstock, land location and shape, and tree placement. I believe that with the right choices and planning, my orchard will be productive and long-lasting.

This blog post aims to inspire those who want to start an orchard and provide information on tree selection and placement. With the right research and planning, you can too create your dream orchard.
